The recurring ensemble
Same valley. Different ways of seeing it.
Every friend brings a recognizable body, habit and way of thinking. No one has to become the same kind of bug for the group to move forward.
Lee
A curious snail with a drumshell—and room for almost anything.
Pronouns: they/them
Lee is the central character of Znail Valley. A rejection, a shadow, an echo or a muddle of feelings can fill their whole view. Then Lee begins to notice: who is nearby, what changed, which clue matters and what might happen after one small try.
- Curious
- Drumshell storage
- Big reactions
- Looks again
Book appearances: Lee appears throughout Books 1–8, from Pebble Ball Pals through What’s Bugging You?.

The Znails
Znails move quickly because they value orderly, rule-based efficiency. Their bustle makes one way of moving through the world look obvious—until a quieter question, an unexpected bug or a different pace reveals something the line did not account for.
Lily
A wise ladybug who notices when the clearest help can be brief.
Pronouns: she/her
Lily does not need a long speech to help a story turn. She watches, waits and offers one useful line when it can open space for someone else to notice. Her wisdom points toward the next discovery; it does not take the discovery away.
- Wise
- Observant
- Clear
- Never lecture-y
Story trail: Lily helps widen Lee’s view in Book 1, follows the listening trail in Book 4, joins the sleepover in Book 5, and returns for the glowing mystery in Book 7.
Meet Lily in one clear line →Itsy Betsy
An inventor spider who keeps a notebook close and a hypothesis closer.
Pronouns: she/her
Betsy observes before she decides. She fills stacks of notebooks, tests possibilities and learns from results—including the experiments that do something completely unexpected. Her mechanical eighth leg is one of her own inventions.
- Inventor
- Observer
- Hypothesis tester
- Mechanical eighth leg
Story trail: Meet Betsy in Book 1, follow her sound experiments in Book 4, look again with her in Book 5, and see her experiments in Book 7 and Book 8.
Open Betsy’s notebook →Flicker
A bright firefly whose feelings can shine through before words arrive.
Pronouns: he/him
Flicker brings light, energy and a willingness to try. His brightness can reveal what he is feeling—even before he has said it. Sometimes more light helps. Sometimes, as the Glintkin make clear, a gentler glow leaves more room to notice.
- Bright
- Expressive glow
- Patient song
- Tries again
Story trail: Find Flicker with the first friends in Book 1, shining a light on fear in Book 2, looking up in Book 5, and returning in Books 7 and 8.

The Glintkin
Glintkin are small, luminous creatures that make inspiration visible. Their colors and silhouettes connect them to the characters whose ideas are beginning to glow, while their shifting presence shows that inspiration can be real before anyone can explain—or control—it.
KoKo
A sound-loving bat with thick glasses and an ear for what comes back.
Pronouns: she/her
KoKo knows echoes. In a cave where every word returns, that makes her exactly the friend Lee needs. Her thick glasses, enormous eyes and careful listening make sound visible—and help Lee hear the difference between a harsh conclusion and words that leave room for a next step.
- Sound lover
- Echo expert
- Thick glasses
- Finding a voice
Featured appearance: KoKo joins Lee in the echo cave in Book 3, The Words That Came Back.

More neighbors make the valley move.
Some stories run beside the main action or turn outward toward the person holding the book.
Zoh & Zeb
Two small recurring neighbors with a side-story worth watching. Their appearances reward readers who look beyond the main action.
The reader
Sometimes the most important voice is holding the book. What’s That Sound? turns outward and lets the reader change the mystery.
