KoKo: The Bat Who Loves Sounds and Finds Her Voice

KoKo is Znail Valley’s sound-loving bat with thick glasses: a careful listener, an echo expert and the friend who helps Lee discover that the words sent into a cave can change what comes back.

Listen for the echo

KoKo notices what comes back.

Some sounds whoosh past. Some bounce back louder. KoKo listens for the difference. In The Words That Came Back, that careful attention helps Lee hear how one hard moment has grown into words about everything.

KoKo loves sounds, but her own voice can feel like the scariest echo of all. She does not hand Lee a bright slogan. Instead, KoKo makes the cave into an experiment: hear the echo, notice what was put into it and try words that are accurate enough to trust and useful enough to lead toward a next step.

Verified story trail

A cave full of words. One bat who understands echoes.

After Lee loses a favorite pebble ball, worried words follow them into a cave. The cave sends those words back—only louder. Then KoKo swoops in.

What KoKo does: listens to the exact words, separates one event from a whole identity and helps Lee test language with more accuracy, possibility and care.

What stays true: the lost ball and the hard feeling are not erased. Different words simply make a different next step easier to see.

“Caves only give back what you put in.”

Sound play

Try a KoKo listening experiment.

This is play, not a performance. A child can make the sound, point, draw its shape, move like it, choose between ideas—or listen.

  1. Make one sound

Try a hum, tap, rustle, plink or invented noise. Change one thing: make it softer, longer, lower or farther away.

  2. Describe before guessing

What was actually heard? Was it quick, bouncy, scratchy, steady, near or repeating?

  3. Send it back

Echo the sound together. Then change one detail. What did the new version make easier to notice?

  4. Make room for a voice

Let each person choose how to add a clue: speaking, signing, drawing, tapping, moving, selecting—or passing for now.
