About Znail Valley

Small enough to notice. Big enough to matter.

Znail Valley is an independent picture-book series created by Aria de Clea for ages 4–8 and PreK–Grade 2. In a funny, strange and deeply observant bug world, recognizable feelings and social moments become things the characters can follow, test, tangle, misunderstand and discover together.

What kind of place is this?

A world where hidden things become visible.

A feeling might become a web. A cruel thought might echo through a cave. Inspiration might glow, flit away and refuse to be controlled. Counting might begin with ten strange seeds and end with a clearer idea of what it means to be dependable.

Znail Valley uses bug-scale physical metaphors for experiences that can otherwise be difficult to hold still. The characters do not begin with a tidy answer. They notice, wonder, try something, watch what happens and revise.

Failure belongs here too. A wrong guess, a plan that backfires or a strategy that does not help is not wasted space. It is part of discovering what the moment actually needs.

How a Znail Valley story moves

The question gets to have an adventure.

The pattern changes from book to book, but discovery usually grows from action rather than an authority figure arriving to explain the lesson.

Built for reading together

Two readers sit down. Both get a story.

The child-facing adventure stays concrete, visual and playful. The grown-up reading beside them may recognize an emotional, relational or philosophical layer underneath.

A child may see…
  • a shadow that will not stop following Lee
  • a spider with notebooks and a mechanical eighth leg
  • tiny Glintkin that appear when ideas spark
  • bug moves for feelings that arrive in a muddle
  • friends making, testing and revising unusual plans
A grown-up may notice…
  • how fear changes when curiosity becomes possible
  • how harsh self-talk can sound true merely because it repeats
  • how listening and speaking both require room
  • how different coping strategies work differently
  • how care becomes visible through actions rather than labels

The recurring ensemble

Different ways of moving through the same world.

The characters return across the series with recognizable bodies, habits, questions and relationships. Difference is part of the valley—not a problem placed there for somebody else to solve.

Lee

A curious drumshell snail who uses they/them pronouns. Lee often discovers that observing more closely changes the shape of the problem.

Betsy

The Itsy Betsy spider: inventor, hypothesis-maker, observer and keeper of many notebooks. Her mechanical eighth leg may contain more surprises than anyone knows.

Flicker

A firefly whose brightness can reveal a feeling before Flicker has decided what to say about it.

KoKo

A bat with thick glasses, a love of sounds and complicated feelings about using his own voice.

Lily

A wise ladybug who may offer one useful line, then leave enough space for everyone else to discover what it means.

The Znails

Very fast. Very efficient. Sometimes so certain about the quickest path that another way of moving becomes difficult to see.

Eight published books

Begin in order—or begin with today.

Each story stands alone. Reading from Book 1 onward lets the world and relationships accumulate; choosing by theme lets a child enter through the door that is already open.

Who makes Znail Valley?

A creator, a studio and a small press.

The roles are distinct, and the facts stay simple.

Aria de Clea

The creator and writer of Znail Valley, based in Santa Clara, California. Aria’s public identity remains deliberately mysterious and bug-like; the work is the clearest portrait. Meet Aria de Clea →

Weeping Starlight Press

The publisher of the Znail Valley picture-book series.

Clea Studios

The creative studio associated with the development of the project. It is separate from the publisher role.

About the series

What is Znail Valley?

Znail Valley is an independent picture-book series in which recurring bug characters explore recognizable feelings, questions and social moments through humor, action and imaginative physical metaphors.

What ages are the Znail Valley books for?

The series is created primarily for ages 4–8 and PreK–Grade 2. The books work as family, classroom and library read-alouds.

Do the books need to be read in order?

No. Each book stands alone. Reading in order reveals how the world and relationships grow, while choosing by theme lets a reader begin with the moment that feels most relevant.

Are the books lessons about feelings?

They are stories first. Emotional and social ideas emerge through character, action, humor, visual metaphor, failed attempts and discovery rather than a narrator announcing a lesson.

Who writes and publishes Znail Valley?

Aria de Clea created and writes the series. Weeping Starlight Press publishes it, and Clea Studios is the creative studio associated with the project.

How many Znail Valley books are published?

Eight Znail Valley picture books are published. Current formats and ordering information appear on each book’s page.

Keep wandering

Every story opens a different door.

Begin with the book that makes a child curious—or the real moment that could use a small bug, a wild idea and another way of looking.
